To help out-of-town guests eat well while visiting, we have put together a list of our favorite places in to go for food and drinks. Most of these are located in the north end of town within reasonable walking distance from our place, and the ones with an asterisk (*) are our go-to spots.

Breakfast

  • Sweet North  $  – A pretzel-specialty local bakery with great coffee, tea, breakfasts, lunch, and desert options
  • Rooster’s   $  – Traditional breakfast place
  • Hoito*  $ – $$  –  Finnish-Canadian restaurant serving Thunder Bay’s most famous finish pancakes
  • Kangas*  $ – $$  –  Finnish-Canadian restaurant that also has great finish pancakes and where you can also go have a sauna (you can even get your pancakes to-go and eat them in the sauna as some locals like to)
  • Thunder Bay Country Market $  –  Really good breakfasts and a chance to pick up some things from local vendors

Lunch (or Early Dinner)

  • Sweet North* $  – Sandwiches, soups, and treats
  • The Growing Season* $ – $$  –  Local eatery featuring homemade wraps, salads, soups, desserts, daily specials, fresh juices and smoothies
  • Bonobo’s Foods* $ – $$   – Vegetarian and vegan restaurant with amazing burgers, fries, salads, and take-out options
  • Organic Garden Café $ – $$  –  A little vegetarian eatery tucked away in an unassuming location

Dinner (and Lunch)

  • Madhouse*  $ – $$  – Gastropub and neighbourhood hangout with good nachos and drinks
  • Both Hands Bakery  $ – $$  –  Traditional Italian pizzeria and a restaurant/bakery bringing together Northwestern Ontario products and people (rustic breads and pizzas are baked in our hand-built wood-fired dome oven)
  • The Sovereign Room*  $$  – A local favorite with a big beer menu, some really good pizzas, and solid brunches on Saturdays
  • Thai Kitchen*  $$  – The best Thai food we’ve ever had
  • In Common*  $$  – Delicious pub food with a healthy twist and great drinks
  • Bight  $$  –  Local and seasonally inspired fresh menu on the waterfront (best/only real patio in town!)
  • Red Lion Smokehouse $$  –  Barbecue restaurant and smokehouse with some amazing burgers and large (but pricey) beer selection
  • Nook*  $$  – Fine Italian cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere where homemade pastas, charcuterie boards, and wood-fired pizzas are the specialty (really good wine too)
  • El Tres $$ -$$$  –  Mexican restaurant that use fresh, seasonal, local, and delicious ingredients and makes amazing mixed drinks including a variety of margaritas
  • Tomlin  $$ – $$$  – Delicious ever-changing local food menu with an emphasis on keeping things seasonal and incredible mixed drinks
  • Silver Birch  $$ – $$$  – Canadian regional dishes featuring local meat, cheese and product including fish from Lake Superior, wild game and traditional favorites with a northern flare

Dessert

  • Prime Gelato*  –  Fresh artisanal Gelato made with passion and local ingredient
  • Sweet Escape – Cake Café and Bakery with gourmet cupcakes and good coffee too
